TOEIC® Listening Part 3: Conversations – Key Strategies for High Scores
Sep 08, 2024Practice Tips for TOEIC Listening Part 3: Conversations
In Part 3 of the TOEIC Listening Section, you’ll hear short conversations between two or more speakers. This part of the test is challenging because you need to understand the main ideas, details, and intentions behind what’s being said—all while listening just once. But don’t worry! With the right approach and regular practice, you can ace this section.
1. Read the Questions First
Before the conversation even starts, you’ll be given time to read the questions. Use this time wisely! Skim the questions so you know what information to focus on while listening. Are they asking for details like who, what, where, or when? This will guide your attention and keep you from getting lost in unnecessary information.
2. Listen for Key Information
In the conversation, it’s important to identify:
-
Who is speaking: Are they customers, employees, or managers?
-
What they are discussing: Is it about a product, a service, or an event?
-
Where the conversation is taking place: A workplace? A hotel? This will often provide important context for answering questions.
Pay attention to specific details like dates, times, numbers, or names, as these are often tied to questions.
3. Don’t Get Stuck on One Detail
If you miss a piece of information, don’t panic. The conversation keeps moving, and so should you. Focus on catching as much as you can, and don’t dwell on something you didn’t hear. Often, answering the questions doesn’t require knowing every detail.
4. Use Context to Your Advantage
TOEIC questions won’t always match the exact words you heard in the conversation. This is where context clues come into play. For example, the tone of voice or setting can give you insights into what’s happening or what a speaker really means. Understanding the intention behind the speaker's words is just as important as understanding the words themselves.
5. Practice Time Management
You won’t have unlimited time to answer questions, so speed and accuracy are crucial. Practice responding to questions efficiently by focusing on the most important details. Over time, you’ll become quicker and more comfortable with the pacing. Remember, TOEIC Listening Part 3 often requires rapid decision-making, so working on your timing during practice will really pay off.

Try Answering the Questions: After listening to each conversation, you’ll get a chance to answer questions just like in the real exam. Use the tips mentioned above—read the questions beforehand, listen for key information, and stay calm even if you miss a detail.
-
Review and Learn: Once you’ve answered, the video will guide you through the correct answers and explanations. This helps reinforce what you did well and shows you areas where you can improve.
